Practicing Boat Safety Reduces Injury and Saves Lives

After you have owned a boat for a while, you can very easily get out of the habit of checking a safety list before leaving shore or not informing new passengers on what to do in case of an emergency. You may even go out on trips without making sure you have necessary supplies and emergency gear. It is important for you to remember to always check a safety list before pushing away from shore and make sure that everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. This will reduce the risk of others getting injured and may even save lives.

One of the very first things that you want to do is make sure that others know where you are going. You can contact a friend, family member, or even leave specific information at the marina before you leave. Write down your name, phone number, the name of your boat and other important information. Tell them when you are leaving, where you are going, and when you plan to return. In case you experience an emergency while out on the water, you will be sure that someone will look for you if you do not return on time.

Everyone who rides on your boat should know how to use the safety equipment. Of course, everyone should have their own life jacket and wear it at all times. Everyone should know the basics of how to run the boat just in case something happens and you are not able to do it yourself. Giving all of your passengers basic information that goes from refilling an engine with fuel while out on the water to using boat dock lifts can prevent injuries and potentially save lives.

It is important to check the weather before going out on the boat, particularly for a longer trip. You can check the Internet, radio, or television to see what the local forecast will be when you plan to travel on the boat. If storms are forecast, it would be better to postpone the trip. You do not want to be out on rough water, especially if you do not have much experience or others with you are inexperienced.

Boating can be a great hobby or a complete lifestyle. In order for it to be enjoyable, you must practice safety first each time you go on a boating adventure.
